FSU football didn't have many things to go right in its 2024 season. The offense was among the worst among Power Four teams, and the defense fell toward the back fourth nationally.
However, FSU special teams ranked among the best nationally for most of the year, largely thanks to senior FSU punter Alex Mastromanno and place kicker Ryan Fitzgerald.
However, it was Mastromanno, who got named a Consensus First Team All-American on Thursday morning.
Those numbers are crazy, as over half of his punts went for over 50 yards in 2024. Mastromanno has a big leg, but can also use precision when trying to pin teams deep in their territory. He only had one punt to go for a touchback and landed 18 inside his opponent's 20-yard line.
That's amazing, considering Mastromanno often punted from deep inside FSU territory because the offense was horrible and couldn't move the football for much of the season. It was a great way to cap his career, as he saw steady improvement every year at FSU.
I know most people don't think of the punter when thinking about important pieces on a football team. However, Mastromanno was a legitimate weapon in the field position game. It's a shame FSU couldn't take advantage of the great year he had in 2024. His overall career at FSU was impressive, considering he came to FSU from another country and endured a global pandemic his first year away from home.
FSU has big shoes to fill in his absence for the 2025 season.
