Run The Ball Well Enough To Slow Bama's Defense Down
I know this seems like a no-brainer, but it’s really that simple. FSU couldn’t run the ball against my daughter’s high school team last year, and it severely limited what they could do on offense. Teams knew they couldn’t run the ball and put them in predictable passing situations, and FSU couldn’t pass block or catch wide-open passes.
FSU quarterback Thomas Castellanos will likely have a role in the running game to give the offense a numbers advantage. That’s something else the offense didn’t have last year, and the offensive line should be better.
Alabama’s defense struggled against mobile quarterbacks (most defenses do), but the real key is running the ball well enough to stay ahead of the chains. Thomas Castellanos isn’t a drop-back passer who can throw dots on third and 12 to convert first downs. They must find success on the early downs to create third and five or less. If they can do that, it opens the FSU playbook to many more options.
