Tommy Castellanos Has Potential
The reports about Tommy Castellanos in fall camp all seemed to be positive. I think he’s a great fit for Gus Malzahn’s offense, and Malzahn will do a much better job of playing to his strengths than Bill O’Brien did at Boston College last season.
I think it’s clear the coaching staff wants to replicate what Jordan Travis was able to do in 2022. FSU will likely emphasize Castellanos a tad more in the running game than Travis that year. However, we saw a lot of screens and shorter passes coupled with the deep route concepts that Travis executed best.
We saw a lot of post routes and play-action with Jordan Travis having decent success. However, one of the best aspects of Jordan Travis was his ability to avoid turnovers.
He made good decisions with the football and lived to play another down. That’s something Castellanos struggled with in 2023, but improved on in 2024. He’s only thrown a handful of interceptions in fall camp from what we know.
If he can avoid turnovers and play to his strengths? There’s no reason FSU can’t show massive improvements on offense in 2025.
