FSU football: 3 MAJOR reasons to expect more coaches changes after Florida game
By Kelvin Hunt
New Coordinators Will Want Their Guys
FSU firing both coordinators is a big deal and shows they are serious about trying to right the ship.
Why wouldn't they be since they'd be on the hook for 63 million dollars to Mike Norvell if they fired him after this season?
Folks asking why other guys didn't get fired on Sunday, and it's simple. The new offensive and defensive coordinator will want to hire guys they are comfortable working with.
They likely won't have ties to guys like Randy Shannon, Tony Tokarz, Chris Thomsen, Pat Surtain, David Johnson, John Papuchis, or Odell Haggins.
Would anyone be safe from this group? Odell Haggins has been at FSU his entire career and is an excellent coach, but he's a liability on the recruiting trail. Would a new offensive coordinator keep Tokarz(who took a demotion to follow Norvell to FSU before getting promoted)?
David Johnson has been decent as the recruiting coordinator, but most of his recruiting ties are in Louisiana. Chris Thomsen reeled in two stud tight ends last recruiting cycle and has another committed(if they can keep him).
John Papuchis has been solid on special teams but failed to close on big-time defensive targets in high school. Pat Surtain didn't have college coaching experience before arriving and has been one of your better recruiters.
I don't expect Randy Shannon to return next year.
