Former FSU quarterback enters fall camp as 'backup' on the depth chart at new school

Gotta be careful how you move out here, the grass ain't always greener.

I've written on this site a lot about how FSU football fans react to things that happen with the football team. I know FSU had a terrible year last year, but the sky-is-falling mentality every time something happens is played out.

When the news broke that Luke Kromenhoek was going to enter the transfer portal, you'd have thought FSU lost prime Jamies Winston with how some fans acted on social media.

I wrote then that he wasn't worth overpaying to keep when he wasn't good enough to be the starter in 2025. He needed another year of development before he would be ready. However, he decided to transfer (it was more so his father) to Mississippi State, another team that went 2-10 last season. I wrote about how he wasn't trending to be the starter a few months ago, but he's clearly not listed as the starter with fall camp starting at Mississippi State.

"The Bulldogs’ preseason depth chart lists Shapen as the starter, with Kromenhoek and Taylor competing for backup duties."

I don't wish any ill will towards the young man, but how this situation has unraveled feels a bit like you reap what you sow. Kromenhoek could win the job, I suppose, but it'll take him playing at a level he hasn't come close to reaching with an experienced returner in the No. 1 slot and a talented freshman competing with him.

It's a tough spot for Kromenhoek to be in, much worse than the quarterback room he left at FSU.

I write this as a lesson for FSU fans to stop with the emotional responses every time something happens. We had fans talking about giving him whatever he wants (money) to make him stay before he entered the portal. That was the worst piece of advice ever.

Mike Norvell did the right thing in that situation. He made a play to win in 2025, save money, and keep with a better shot of keeping his job.
