Florida State softball (36-7, 12-3 ACC) was undefeated in ACC play and had rattled off 25 consecutive victories before getting swept by No. 23 Stanford over the weekend. FSU, despite the winning streak, had the No. 9 RPI nationally, according to D1Softball.

They have a win over No. 10 UCLA, but bad losses to Alabama (twice), Tennessee, and Texas Tech before getting swept by Stanford. The narrative surrounding the program is that they have beaten a lot of bad, mediocre, and good teams, but struggle to beat the top teams, and that’s fair.

They have one ranked win out of 36, and that’s probably why they didn’t have a higher RPI, despite the nation’s longest winning streak.

FSU pitching has to stop walking so many batters, and they need more batters to be consistent if they want to make a deep postseason run.

FSU’s RPI dropped to No. 14 after the three-game skid, which leaves little room for error if they plan to host Super Regionals. The ACC teams remaining on their schedule are not ranked, and they only face one ranked team the rest of the way, the rival Florida Gators (No. 7 currently).

Granted, FSU has taken care of business against non-ranked ACC teams thus far. However, if they drop one or two more games against the rest of the schedule, they could find themselves outside the top 16 seeds.

The NCAA has expanded the postseason for softball to 32 seeded teams. FSU has hosted a regional each of the last few seasons, and made it to at least the Super Regionals since 2023.

There's no question they will play in the postseason, but the last third of their schedule will play a big part in where they play.
