Florida State baseball couldn’t afford to lose its road series against a Clemson team that may not make the postseason, so winning the Sunday rubber match was paramount. FSU followed the script from the first two games, jumping on the Tigers early and getting an outstanding quality start from Bryson Moore for a 6-3 win.

Moore went six innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, one walk, and four strikeouts. Florida State probably should have won the game more comfortably, pounding out 15 hits and six walks. However, they struggled with runners on base, only going 4-23 with runners on base and 3-15 with runners in scoring position. Florida State left 15 runners on base, which is something they must eliminate against better teams.

John Stuetzer had a big day, going 3-5 with two RBI. Brody Dellamielleur went 3-6 with an RBI. Nathan Cmeyla went 3-5 with a home run, Ben Barrett went 2-4, and Carter McCulley went 2-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Florida State is showing a lot of heart and grit since the debacle against Stanford.

The Florida State bullpen was great, going three innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, two walks, and five strikeouts. FSU pulling midweek starter Cooper Whited early in the week in anticipation of a role this weekend was big, and he’ll likely play a nice role for Florida State in the postseason out of the bullpen.

FSU uncharacteristically had four errors, but overcame the miscues. Clemson went 1-15 with runners on base and hit into two double plays.

Florida State needed to avoid the loss to keep pace with its top-eight RPI ranking. If they can win the series or sweep the rival Miami Hurricanes next week, they will remain among the top four teams in the ACC, receiving a first-round bye. If FSU can win at least one game in the ACC Tournament, I like its chances to slide into a top-eight spot.
