This is a negative turn of events for Florida State recruiting.

Florida State football's 2027 recruiting class started with good news on Sunday morning, as four-star safety/linebacker Jernard Albright flipped his commitment from South Carolina to Florida State. This was a big step in the right direction for the 2027 class, but the work still has to be done, and as we all know, the games for the 2026 season still have to be played.

Head coach Shane Beamer had quite the morning. Ironically, I have the cover photo of his father (Frank Beamer) with current Virginia Tech coach James Franklin, which was totally not intentional. However, the younger Beamer has had his fair share of struggles while at South Carolina.

Let's not forget that Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has plenty to work on as well. However, it was encouraging that the Seminoles are capable of bringing talented recruits into the fold. With that said, high school recruiting is ever-changing and should never be viewed as a guarantee.

Four-star wide receiver target Cam Wade chooses Virginia Tech over Florida State

Florida State quarterback commit Logan Flaherty came to town this weekend to complete his official visit because the coaching staff felt as though this was a pivotal trip with many prospects on campus. One of the bigger names was four-star wide receiver Sean Green.

The Seminoles didn't have a wide receiver prospect in their 2027 recruiting class. It looks like Florida State wants to be selective in deciding who they want after grabbing six of them during last year's cycle. Assistant coach Tim Harris Jr. has been a phenomenal recruiter for Florida State.

However, sometimes a loss is taken on the recruiting trail, as four-star wide receiver Cam Wade elected to commit to Virginia Tech over Florida State on Sunday.

The Hokies got a sizable contribution to their athletic program, plus they have a tremendous recruiter in former Penn State head coach James Franklin. Originally, I thought that they would potentially take 2-3 wide receivers in the 2027 cycle, and Wade would be one of them.

The talented recruit was supposed to be officially visit Florida State next weekend for his official visit. However, Wade thought that he should commit earlier than his July 1st decision date and pledge to Virginia Tech.

Florida State will have to navigate to its backup option with three-star wide receiver Majay Thompson from Crest, North Carolina, who will be on campus next weekend. This is probably why quarterback commit Logan Flaherty was putting on his recruiting hat for Thompson a few days ago.

This isn't a reason to panic in Tallahassee by any means, but the coaching staff needs to ensure that they have capable backup plans in place at wide receiver.
