Florida State basketball head coach Luke Loucks has been on a recruiting heater over the past few days. He landed his third quality commitment from the transfer portal with local product Anthony Robinson II over the rival Miami Hurricanes on Thursday morning.

The blueprint is clear. Loucks values guys with the ability to put the ball in the basketball, great length, and the ability to make an impact on defense. There’s only one thing missing, and that’s an experienced big man who can make an impact.

Florida State had a major target on campus recently, Colorado’s Sebastian Rancik, who would be an excellent fit. He’s 6’11” but not the typical big man who’s relegated to the paint. Rancik can handle the ball and stretch the spacing on the floor, while knocking down shots from the three-point line.

He’s not a rim protector per se, but has enough of a presence to make a difference, unlike last year’s team. He could also improve the rebounding aspect, and likely average seven or eight rebounds per game.

I love what Luke Loucks is building for next year and beyond. It's time to get excited about Florida State basketball again!

Ranick left FSU without committing and had plans to visit BYU and another school. However, if he decides to go elsewhere, FSU still needs a big man to complement the wing or tweener players they have committed. A quality big man who can impact both ends of the floor would send this transfer class into the upper half of the ACC and likely make FSU a force to be reckoned with.

So far, this transfer portal class is likely more talented overall than last year’s, and we see how Luke Loucks and the staff got last year’s team to morph over the season. I think the staff will use what they learned from last year and apply that from the onset with this year’s team, and the success Florida State had on the backend of last year should make it easier to buy into for the incoming players. If FSU lands a quality big, things could get scary in Tally!
