Florida State football went to the West Coast and lost to a bad Stanford team last fall. FSU basketball didn’t have to travel out west; Stanford came to Tallahassee, and the Noles handled their business.
However, FSU softball traveled out west for a three-game series against Stanford and got swept. It was the first time they had been swept in ACC play since 2011, and they lost a game on a walk-off grand slam!
Fast forward a couple of weeks, and FSU baseball traveled out west to play Stanford and lost the first two games by one run. They had a one-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth and lost on a walk-off grand slam to get swept just like FSU softball did.

None of the Florida State teams have played well when traveling to California.
Florida State fans have seen enough. They believe there’s a curse on teams when they have to travel out west to play Stanford. Luckily, FSU soccer didn’t have to travel there when they defeated the Cardinals in the national championship game a few months ago to avenge a previous home loss against Stanford.
I don’t believe in curses or anything like that, but it is weird that FSU has lost in every sport that’s traveled out west to play Stanford. Does the difference in time zones affect the players? It does, and anytime you play on the road, it’s different than playing in front of the home fans. FSU was favored to win all of the games they lost, and most of the losses came down to poor execution and self-inflicted wounds.
FSU softball pitchers walked too many batters in their series, and the FSU baseball offense was poor in the entire series. FSU football couldn’t do anything, even with Stanford playing without its starting quarterback. Hopefully, FSU won’t have to worry about traveling out west too many more seasons if they can find a way out of the ACC over the next two years. Until then, hopefully, FSU can find a way to exact some revenge the next time they play in whatever sport.
