Whoever you think is in consideration of the title "DBU", Florida State has to be in the discussion. The Seminoles have had several defensive backs come out of Tallahassee and been successful in the National Football League.
Some of the successful defenders included Deion Sanders, LeRoy Butler, Antonio Cromartie, Jalen Ramsey, Xavier Rhodes, and Terrell Buckley.
One that I didn't feature on the list was Derwin James, who was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. James had 94 tackles (six for loss), two sacks, and three interceptions for the Chargers last season.
This is an exciting time for former Florida State defensive back Derwin James, with the massive NFL contract
For the fifth time in his career, the former Florida State Seminole was awarded with a Pro Bowl recognition. While the All-Star Game itself is important, it is still impressive that James gained the Pro Bowl nod.
The talented safety has been a household name in their organization. As a result, James was awarded the highest paid at the position in the NFL once again. He agreed to a three-year, $75.6 million deal, which has $57.5 million guaranteed, on Tuesday afternoon.
This was good for the Chargers for getting the deal done since James is in the prime of his career. Obviously, the former Florida State player dealt with injuries during his time in college and as a professional, but they cannot let a talent like that walk out the door.
Florida State fans know how good the defensive back was in the Garnet and Gold, where he recorded 186 tackles (15 for loss), 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions, and 16 pass breakups during his time from 2015-2017 (according to nolefan.org).
It was great to see James reset the contract market for safeties. Hopefully, that attracts talented defensive backs for head coach Mike Norvell to grab if the program starts consistently putting together wins again.
