FSU LANDS FIVE-STAR CB CHAUNCEY KENNON
Can we all agree that Florida State defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. is a beast on the recruiting trail? While I realize that the Seminoles have an advantage when recruiting for the position since it has a deep history of sending players to the NFL, it is still impressive nonetheless.
Florida State was a power move by head football coach Mike Norvell. The 2-10 season was a disaster, and there is no way to sugarcoat what transpired in 2024. However, there are instances where the program has to rip the band-aid off, and the Seminoles have done just that as they landed five-star cornerback Chauncey Kennon.
This is a huge development for Florida State, but what are the impacts of landing him?
1. HELP ON THE RECRUITING TRAIL
Florida State already has 22 prospects committed to the fold for its 2026 recruiting class. The program wants to continue stacking high school talent for its roster, especially with the new 105-man scholarship. It doesn't hurt that they now have a five-star defensive back persuading others to come to Tallahassee.
2. PLAY ON THE FIELD
I realize that assistant coaches Patrick Surtain Sr. and Evan Cooper have an abundance to work with at the position. However, the 6'1" ball-hawking defensive back Chauncey Kennon is a force that opposing offenses will be nervous to throw his way. The young talent is great and all, but when you continue to stack elite prospects, the competition makes it get better.
3. STOP THE NARRATIVE OF NORVELL RECRUITING
I am sure that the Miami and Florida fan bases will still use this as a way to say that head football coach Mike Norvell cannot recruit high school talent and can only use the transfer portal. This season cannot go like 2024, but the Seminoles are red-hot on the recruiting trail, and individuals are starting to notice whether they like it or not.
