FSU football: Punter Alex Mastromanno named finalist for Ray Guy Award
FSU football has had a tremendous level of success this season on the gridiron as they completed the feat of finishing undefeated during the regular season.
The Seminoles have had a multitude of players who have been mentioned as being major contributors in their eighteen straight victories. However, some unseen heroes typically don’t get recognized like they should.
One of those players is redshirt junior punter Alex Mastromanno. The Melbourne, Australia native has had 52 punts this season for an average of 45.9 yards per punt (long of 59).
He has been recognized as one of the three finalists for the Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation’s best collegiate punter. The other finalists are Matt Hayball (Vanderbilt) and Tory Taylor (Iowa). The winner of the award will be announced on December 8th during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.
FSU fans can also be able to vote for their favorite punter on the Ray Guy Award website. According to a statistic from FSU Sports Information, the Australian was the first-ever finalist for the award.
Mastromanno has played a pivotal role in being able to flip the field position to make it more difficult for opposing offenses. While I realize that most fans don’t want to discuss punters at times, offenses can sometimes become stagnant and they will have to be forced to punt.
Special teams have been a staple for head football coach Mike Norvell since he arrived in Tallahassee. Norvell has stated that he feels as though Mastromanno has been a viable weapon for the football team thus far this season.
Undefeated Florida State will be traveling up to Charlotte, North Carolina for the ACC Championship Game to take on the No. 14 Louisville Cardinals. The Seminoles will likely need Mastromanno as they hope to put the Cardinals’ offense deep in their own territory.
