No. 4 FSU football scored 24 unanswered points in its 24-7 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers Saturday afternoon.

Many folks pointed to this game as a potential trap game in the preseason, but playing without their two best wide receivers, Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman, added another level of difficulty against a defense ranked No. 33 in FEI advanced metrics going into the game.

However, Pittsburgh has been susceptible to the pass, and that’s the area FSU attacked early in the game with a bevy of wide receivers and tight ends. FSU completed passes to eight different receivers, including all three tight ends.

The offense was still explosive without its two best options, with seven receivers having at least one reception of 13+ yards.

It was tough sledding on the ground, as FSU only had two runs of 20+ yards, but one of those was Trey Benson’s 55-yard touchdown run to ice the game late in the third quarter.

Some fans were frustrated with the performance, and I wrote about some major overreactions here. Here are my three major takeaways from the win.
