5. FSU vs. UNC (2020)

The 2020 regular season was certainly one to forget for the Florida State Seminoles’ football program as they went on to finish the year with a 3-6 record. However, one positive that cannot be overlooked is FSU’s 31-28 victory over then-ranked No. 5 North Carolina in front of a limited home crowd in Doak Campbell Stadium (due to COVID-19).

The Seminoles were coming off a 42-26 road loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and possessed a 1-3 record, which included an embarrassing season-opening loss to Georgia Tech and a 52-10 loss to arch-rival Miami (Norvell did not coach in the contest due to COVID-19).

Quarterback Jordan Travis put his dual-threat ability on display against the Tar Heels’ defensive unit where he completed 8 of his 19 passes for 191 yards and had 16 rushing attempts for 107 yards. Running back La’Damian Webb also imposed his will on the ground where he recorded 12 carries for 109 yards. The Seminoles seemed to have North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell’s number in the first half where defensive end Joshua Kaindoh was able to come away with a pick-six to give Florida State a 24-0 lead late in the second quarter.

While the Seminoles held on to win the game by a score of 31-24, it was a signature victory for Mike Norvell in his first season at Florida State.

Shout out to the FSU fan for fulfilling his promise of getting the tattoo of Norvell’s face.
