FSU football: Thoughts on FSU entertaining transfer linebacker
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football recruiting in the 2024 class has a solid foundation with at least one commitment at each position of need.
I’ve written about linebacker recruiting recently and how I think the coaches may be taking a different approach than some fans want.
The staff seems to be not focusing as much on highly-ranked guys coming out of high school and may value a linebacker from the portal more, which is why they have the one linebacker commit and a seemingly very small high school recruiting board.
Zach Blostein reports the Noles could be showing interest in a Northwestern linebacker who entered the transfer portal recently. He’s one of two linebackers to enter the portal after Northwestern fired its head coach due to hazing allegations, among other things.
Justin Cryer was a three-star linebacker in the 2023 recruiting class that signed with Northwestern. The other linebacker was four-star Nigel Glover, and FSU fans wondered why FSU would pursue the lower-ranked of the two players.
Cryer is the player they offered while he was in high school and got him to visit campus for an unofficial visit.
From what I can tell, Glover never received an offer and didn’t visit campus before signing with Northwestern.
It’s as simple as he’s the guy they have more of a relationship with between the two players.
Also, we have to trust the evaluation of the coaching staff instead of the ranking some websites provide on a player. Remember, recent FSU commit Elijah Moore was a three-star on most recruiting sites before he committed to FSU.
As long as the player fits the defensive scheme and fills the roles they want in the defense, that’s all that matters. The good thing about a transfer LB is he’s already been in college nearly a year and would be physically ready to play.
He’ll also have four years remaining because of the timing and coaching change at Northwestern if he decides to come to FSU.
