Fentrell Cypress

Virginia’s transfer defensive back was one of the biggest additions from the transfer portal for Adam Fuller’s defense.

Aside from Renardo Green, FSU struggled at the cornerback position to win one-on-one battles. Fentrell Cypress was second-team All-ACC last season and among national leaders in passes defended with 13.

There was a narrative among some fans coming out of spring camp that Cypress may not have been as good as advertised, but I’d discount that. I attribute it to the same narrative some folks tried to paint with Johnny Wilson last spring, and we saw how that turned out.

Basically, transfer players have to find where they fit into the team while learning the scheme they’re playing in. Nobody will come in and fit perfectly right away.

However, the more experience Cypress gets in the system, the better he’ll play. Remember how Johnny Wilson’s season went?

The defense upgrading at cornerback helps strengthen a weakness from last season and likely means winning more one-on-one matchups in the secondary.
