Defensive Backs  Potential To Be Better in 2022

If I had to peg one position group with the biggest question mark, it would be the secondary. FSU lost All-ACC safety Jammie Robinson, who led the team in tackles the past two seasons. However, Akeem Dent and Shyheim Brown return to the safety positions.

Starting cornerback Renardo Green returns and other experienced defensive backs return, like Jarrian Jones, Greedy Vance, AZ Thomas, and Kevin Knowles. FSU coaches added the top cornerback in the portal from Virginia in Fentrell Cypress. Cypress enrolled in the spring and looks to take on a starting role opposite Green with a strong fall camp.

The biggest question surrounding this unit is depth. FSU signed a ton of defensive backs in the 2023 recruiting class, with a couple enrolling in the spring which should give them a leg up in earning playing time this fall.

Will FSU move upperclassmen with experience to safety or rely on freshmen for depth? If Fentrell Cypress finds his form from Virginia, that gives FSU two very good starting cornerbacks, which was an issue last year.

I think the group has more talent overall than last year, but the coaching staff must find the best combination to put on the field.
