FSU football: Will Shyheim Brown be a breakout star in 2023?
FSU football fans can still hear the “Block in the Bayou” in the Caesars Superdome to this day as redshirt freshman defensive back Shyheim Brown blocked Damian Ramos’ extra point attempt to give the Seminoles a 24-23 victory over the LSU Tigers.
That play showcased his resiliency and patience as he blossomed whenever his number was called.
Brown elevated his play during the season, where he recorded 36 total tackles and 1.5 sacks even as the back up behind do-it-all defender Jammie Robinson.
The Lake City native started to find a rhythm near the end of the season, where he recorded 12 total tackles and 0.5 sacks against Florida and Oklahoma.
He is no longer behind Jammie Robinson, with the All-ACC safety getting selected in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.
However, Brown now has a whole set of expectations to accomplish as he is presumed to be the starting safety alongside redshirt senior Akeem Dent.
FSU fans have discussed about the lack of depth at the safety position, given that younger defensive backs such as Conrad Hussey and KJ Kirkland will likely have to contribute in some capacity this upcoming season.
Brown looks poised to take a major leap forward in his development as he enters his third year in the defensive scheme.
With the Seminoles having heightened expectations coming in 2023, where an ACC Championship appearance and College Football Playoff berth could be in play, Brown will have to put his talents on display.
The national media has talked about the Seminoles’ offensive unit quite a bit this offseason, headlined by veteran quarterback Jordan Travis and his many offensive weapons. However, the defensive unit doesn’t get the love it deserves.
With defensive end Jared Verse and defensive tackle Fabien Lovett Sr. returning for another season, it should allow players such as Shyheim Brown to make more plays if they are able to disrupt the opposing quarterback’s timing.
FSU football fans expect several blowout wins again this year, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Brown shining as opposing offenses are in more predictable situations.
