Defensive Recruiting

Defensive recruiting seems to be the area that’s giving most fans indigestion. I get it, FSU only has three defensive commits, and none are ranked as blue-chip players. First things first, I don’t have any worries when it comes to the defensive backs room.

I believe FSU will take several blue-chip players and will likely get 2-3 commitments in July. They are in the mix with several outstanding targets. I’ve already told you how I feel about linebacker recruiting here. I’m not worried about it, I think this staff doesn’t place a high value on the position and will likely use the portal to help replace Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune.

Plus, they have several young linebackers that must get developed. I think most of the ire around defensive recruiting stems from the defensive line and the defensive end positions. FSU has one defensive line commitment with three-star Jamorie Flagg and no defensive end commitments.

What’s worse is they don’t have a large number of quality targets on the board at those positions. Here’s an outside-the-box take. Remember how FSU took several offensive linemen in the 2022 recruiting class and only took two high school offensive linemen in the 2023 recruiting class?

Now, they’re only looking to take around three high school offensive linemen in the 2024 class. They could be taking the same approach on the defensive side. This allows them to focus on adding more difference-makers at the skill positions in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

FSU took four defensive tackles in the 2022 class(two have since departed) and took Darrell Jackson Jr. (transfer) and four-star Keith Sampson one in the 2023 class.

They added edge rushers Jared Verse (transfer), Dante Anderson, and Aaron Hester to the 2022 class. They took edge rushers Lamont Green Jr., Jaden Jones (JUCO), and Gilber Edmond (transfer) in the 2023 recruiting class.

When you look at it that way, FSU doesn’t need to take a ton of defensive tackles or edge players in 2024. However, they do need to add high-quality targets. They have some quality 2024 targets at defensive end, but the realistic high-quality targets at 2024 defensive tackle seem lacking.
