FSU softball had an amazing 2023 season despite WCWS Finals loss
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball (58-11) lost to Oklahoma Thursday night for the second time in the WCWS Finals to end their 2023 season.
It was disappointing because I don’t think this FSU team played up to their potential and missed a lot of opportunities in the two games.
However, ultimately I think the best team won. Oklahoma has more depth on the mound and up and down their lineup. It’s why they were the prohibitive favorite to win the WCWS all season.
However, this FSU softball team has an amazing season when you look at it as a whole, especially considering their upset loss last season in the Tallahassee Regionals. Not only did they exorcise those demons, but they accomplished every possible goal they could make, except winning the national championship.
Coach Lonni Alameda signed a new contract extension a year ago and cashed in on almost every single performance incentive in the contract except winning the national title:
- Winning ACC Coach of the Year-$10,000
- Winning ACC Regular Season Championship-$10,000
- Winning ACC Tournament Championship-$10,000
- Hosting NCAA Regional-$15,000
- Hosting NCAA Super Regionals-$30,000
- Participating in the Women’s College World Series-$30,000
- Runner-Up in the Women’s College World Series-$10,000
There was a lot of pressure on this 2023 team to exorcise the demons from last year because that team expected to be one of the few to challenge Oklahoma for a national title even though they didn’t win the ACC Regular Title.
For this 2023 team to win the ACC Regular Season and ACC Tournament, host a regional, host a Super Regional, and not lose a game in the WCWS until they made the finals is an outstanding accomplishment.
I wrote about how they could beat Oklahoma before the series began Wednesday night. The crazy thing is FSU went toe-to-toe with Oklahoma, and three innings out of 14 played is what made the difference in the series. FSU softball represented themselves with excellence on and off the field and made this season so enjoyable to cover. It was a great job to all involved for their success.
