FSU football: Coaches taking smarter approach to linebacker recruiting?
By Kelvin Hunt
The highest-ranked player FSU is in the mix within the 2024 recruiting cycle is Edwin Spillman, though they probably won’t sign him.
He ranks as the No. 251 player and the No. 23 linebacker nationally. The three-star commit ranks as the No. 747 player and No. 69 linebacker nationally.
All 11 FSU commits in the 2024 class hail from Georgia or Florida. When we look at the number of composite blue-chip linebackers in those two states combined?
The number will likely surprise you, but there are only 37 blue-chip linebackers in the entire country and only seven in Florida and Georgia.
Of those seven, one is a Clemson commit, and two are Florida commits, South Carolina and Cincinnati have two, and the other two are uncommitted. The latter two have a three-star ranking by 247Sports, which usually does a solid job with recruiting evaluations.
If FSU sticks to the Florida and Georgia region like most fans have been clamoring for the past few recruiting cycles, there are not many options.
Plus, it’s not like freshmen linebackers get on the field and contribute early consistently. That aspect brings me to my theory on FSU linebacker recruiting.
