FSU football: Top 5 things we learned from spring 2023
By Kelvin Hunt
Deepest Roster In Nearly A Decade
The last part is a great segway into how deep this roster is going into the 2023 season. The only weakness is the lack of experience at the safety position.
FSU has talent, but it’s young talent that has to get developed. They have a solid backup quarterback and one of the best running back units in the ACC. They have the best-receiving unit in the ACC, which is a far cry from the 2021 version that ranked last in the conference.
The offensive line will go 10 or more deep with serviceable to good offensive linemen. The defensive tackle group will be arguably the best in the conference.
At the defensive end spot, FSU has two studs in Jared Verse and Patrick Payton. Gilber Edmonds provided solid depth, and FSU has other options, like Byron Turner Jr. or moving Dennis Briggs back out to the end. FSU returns two starting linebackers and DJ Lundy, who has played a lot of snaps in the past two years.
Redshirt freshman Omar Graham looks poised to take on more playing time, and FSU added three freshman linebackers in the last recruiting cycle.
The secondary has better talent overall than last year, and FSU coaches have to find the right rotation based on those skill sets. It’s the QB position and the trenches that make the biggest difference in this year and most of the teams in the past 5-7 years.
