FSU football has developed quite the off-field coaching staff in Tallahassee under the guidance of head football coach Mike Norvell. The Seminoles recently hired a new defensive graduate assistant in Malik Slater, who currently works with the linebackers and was a very productive collegiate linebacker at Valdosta State. Slater was hired on March 9, 2023. The Seminoles seem to be adding another piece to their defensive staff.

According to a report from On3 Senior National College Football Report Matt Zenitz, Florida State is expected to hire veteran assistant Anthony Midget in an off-field role capacity.

Midget was an All-American defensive back with the Virginia Tech Hokies from 1996-1999. He recorded five interceptions in his final season in 1999. Ironically enough, his final collegiate game came in a loss against FSU football in the national championship game.

As a coach, Midget spent his career coaching at Lake Worth (FL) as an assistant coach (2002-2006), Virginia Tech as a graduate assistant (2007), Georgia State as a defensive backs coach/special teams coordinator (2008-2011), Georgia State as a defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach (2012), Penn State as a safeties coach (2013), Houston Texans as an assistant secondary coach (2014-2017), Houston Texans as a secondary coach (2018-2019), and Tennessee Titans as a defensive backs coach (2020-2022).

It seems safe to assume that he will likely be working with the defensive backs at FSU, given that he has coached the position for the past 14 years, and played the position in college and the NFL.
Florida State defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. will enter his first season with the Seminoles after the previous position coach, Marcus Woodson, left to be the co-defensive coordinator with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

It never hurts to add veteran coaching experience to the staff. For reference, Randy Shannon got hired by the Seminoles in 2021 to be a senior defensive analyst. However, in 2022, he was elevated to co-defensive coordinator/linebacker coach. At the very least, FSU adds experience and good pedigree to its coaching staff with ties to the fertile recruiting grounds in South Florida.
