FSU baseball: Major takeaways from Link Jarrett’s first season
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (21-31, 9-21, ACC) defeated Louisville to win its final ACC series of the 2023 season. However, it was the first time the Noles missed the postseason in 45 years.
Was it a disappointing year? Absolutely, but the future is bright under Link Jarrett. I’m sure some short-sighted fans would question that statement.
However, I’d add that you put Parker Messick and Bryce Hubbart on this year’s team. FSU baseball would have won 40+ games and potentially hosted a regional.
Did this team have faults? For sure, but the lack of pitching quality and depth was its Achilles heel. That’s something Link Jarrett and the staff will look to address in the offseason.
Until we have more clarity on new additions to the roster and which players will stay or go, let’s look at some of the major takeaways from the season.
This Team Never Quit
You have a new head coach and a team full of young players playing arguably the most difficult schedule in the nation. FSU got off to a hot start but lost their best pitcher for the year and one of its better young players (D’Amez Ross) for a long stretch.
In the meantime, FSU baseball lost 20 of 22 games. If that isn’t a recipe for a team to quit, I don’t know what is. However, they stayed with it and improved as a team. Young players began to find their roles, and some older pitchers began to find a role on the mound. The Noles finished the season 10-6, including a win over No. 1 Wake Forest.
