FSU softball: Noles hosting NCAA Regionals as No. 3 overall seed
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball (50-8) completed its sweep of the ACC regular-season & Tournament Championship Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Duke.
It was all about waiting to see who they would host in regional play when the selections were made Sunday night.
The Noles learned they were the No. 3 overall seed and would host the regionals in Tallahassee. Of course, the Noles hosted regionals last year, getting upset by Mississippi State to end their season well before anyone expected.
FSU will have Marist, South Carolina, and UCF in their regional. The Noles will face Marist first and face the winner of South Carolina/UCF.
It was no surprise Oklahoma was the No. 1 overall seed, followed by UCLA with the No. 2 seed, with Tennessee as the No. 4 seed. Marist upset Canisius in the MAAC Tournament to make the field with a 29-28 overall record.
UCF won the American Athletic Conference Tournament, finishing with a 39-19 overall record and 15-3 in the conference. South Carolina lost to Tennessee in the SEC Tournament Final and had an overall record of 37-20 and 9-15 in the SEC.
FSU softball matches up well with each team in the regional, with UCF likely posing the biggest threat. They are solid in all three phases of the game and have the best pitching of the three opponents. FSU softball has been on a tear in recent weeks.
They are winners of their last 16 games, including several teams who made the NCAA Tournament. The Tallahassee Regional will begin on Friday, May 19th, and go through May 21st. Ticket information is below:
Coach Alameda’s decision to schedule tough road games against the best teams nationally has helped this team find its identity and could pay dividends as they progress deeper into the tournament.
Aside from a run-rule loss against Oklahoma State, almost all of their losses have come against top competition or by two runs or less.
