FSU football has taken full advantage of the transfer portal and will likely continue to do so in the coming weeks as they prepare for the 2023 season.

The Noles have lost several players, mostly depth pieces, to the portal since spring camp concluded last month.

The biggest need seems to be at the safety position, and FSU coaches have already identified two targets. One target from the transfer porta is UAB’s Jalen Key, and the other is JUCO safety prospect Ashlynd Barker.

It’s one thing for the coaches to recruit players to join the program. However, sometimes the difference maker is when current players on the roster recruit players to join them. That’s what’s happening on social media over the last day.

Local product Jaylen Key announced he would visit FSU football this week, and it didn’t take long for current players to chime in with their stance:

This could impact Key’s recruitment since they are two guys that just went through the transfer process and have been on campus long enough to know the vibes.

FSU beat out some heavy hitters for their commitments, and Key is no different since he’s one of the best safeties in the transfer portal.

The safety position needs depth in the worst way, and Key would be a major addition to the roster. FSU has some things in its favor. FSU staff member Corey Fuller coached Key in high school and, of course, the local ties to the area.

FSU coaches have a high hit rate when they get transfer players to visit campus. It’ll be interesting to see if they can get him to shut his recruitment down and commit to the good guys.

The longer he goes without committing after visiting, probably isn’t the best sign. Then again, we’ve seen FSU win the long-game recruiting battles, going back to Jared Verse last year. Two former players, Jermaine Johnson and Keir Thomas, were instrumental in winning that recruitment.
