FSU Football: Three positions Noles need to pursue in the transfer portal
Safety
This positional need became obvious for Florida State, especially after redshirt junior safety Jammie Robinson (99 total tackles in 2022) opted to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft.
The former South Carolina transfer was considered the heartbeat of the Seminole defense after collecting 183 total tackles (12 tackles for loss) and five interceptions during his two-year playing career in Tallahassee.
Luckily enough, the Seminoles still have redshirt senior Akeem Dent and redshirt sophomore Shyheim Brown.
But redshirt junior Travis Jay and junior Omarion Cooper (who switched positions from cornerback to safety this offseason) announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal. As a result, Florida State is super thin at the safety position.
True freshmen Edwin Joseph and Conrad Hussey are set to enroll in Tallahassee this summer. KJ Kirkland and Quindarrius Jones impressed this spring as early enrollees, but can Florida State rely on the true freshmen defensive backs early in their respective careers?
It’ll likely depend on how well Renardo Green and Fentrell Cypress play, along with how much the defensive line can impact the line of scrimmage.
Either way, more proven depth would be ideal going into the season.
