FSU football: Impact of Joshua Farmer entering transfer portal
By Kelvin Hunt
The first FSU football commit in the Mike Norvell era, Joshua Farmer, has decided to enter the transfer portal.
FSU was the second school to offer Farmer, who didn’t have a ranking at the time, and he committed just a few days after the offer.
Farmer has been hard-working, putting in many hours to transform his body, and became a contributor when Fabien Lovett went down with an injury in the 2022 season.
FSU coaches have praised Farmer’s development this season, but the NIL game has changed college football.
Farmer announced he’ll enter the transfer portal via his Twitter account Tuesday afternoon:
Impact
The loss of Joshua Farmer will impact the 2024 season more than 2023. FSU brought in Braden Fiske and Darrell Jackson at defensive tackle, which likely meant Farmer would continue in a reserve spot.
Ironically, Farmer and Jackson were high school teammates and wanted to play together in college. However, that will no longer be an option. FSU will lose Lovett and Fiske after the season and could lose Darrell Jackson since he’ll be draft eligible.
However, FSU recruited well at the defensive tackle position, with Daniel Lyons, Ayobami Tifase, and Bishop Thomas waiting in the wings. Malcolm Ray could also return in 2024, and four-star defensive tackle signee Keith Sampson, from the 2023 recruiting class will be on campus this summer.
I can’t blame Joshua Farmer if he can get paid and find a starting position at another program since he’ll be draft eligible after this season as well. It’ll be interesting to see where he ends up.
The other part of this is the NIL side of this has to be managed correctly, otherwise, it could create chaos and unrest among the rest of the roster.
I’m sure FSU doesn’t want to lose Farmer, but at some point, you have to draw a line and see the bigger picture. Good luck to him as a young man that’s dealt with a ton of adversity in his life.
