Secondary

The FSU football secondary is likely the least proven unit on the defense with the departure of All-ACC First Team safety Jammie Robinson heading to the NFL.

FSU returns starting safety Akeem Dent and Shyheim Brown, who played a lot of snaps for the Noles. They also return starting cornerback Renardo Green and brought in All-ACC Second Team cornerback Fentrell Cypress from the transfer portal.

That’s arguably the top four players in the secondary, with Greedy Vance(starting at nickel), and players like Omarion Cooper, AZ Thomas, Jarrian Jones, Quindarrius Jones, KJ Kirkland, Conrad Hussey, and Edwin Joseph in reserve roles.

The final four listed are freshmen, with the final two arriving this summer. Kevin Knowles missed spring camp with an injury and will provide experience. However, the lack of experience, particularly in the safety position that’s the concern.

Jones and Kirkland showed well as early enrollees but will need continued development over the summer and fall months. Hussey and Joseph will arrive this summer, but I’d favor the Noles adding an experienced player from the transfer portal if possible.

I would have preferred it to happen before spring camp, but they couldn’t identify anyone to fill the role. That’s the gamble of relying on the transfer portal, but hopefully, a decent option will enter soon.
