FSU softball sweeps doubleheader to clinch series win over No. 4 Clemson
By Kelvin Hunt
No. 6 FSU softball (31-7, 10-1 ACC) took sole possession of first place in the ACC with a doubleheader sweep over No. 4 Clemson to clinch the series win on the road.
FSU shut out Clemson 7-0 in game one and won game two 4-1. MaKenna Reid got her first career start in game one, with Ali DuBois and Kathryn Sandercock pitching in relief.
DuBois picked up the win with 1.2 innings pitched. Michaela Edenfield continued to stay hot, going 2-5 with five RBI, including a 3-run home run in the fifth inning that got out of the ballpark in about .5 seconds.
Sandercock started the second game and went the distance, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out five
Devyn Flaherty got the Noles on the board first, beating out an infield single for an RBI in the top of the third inning. Jahni Kerr had a monster game, going 3-4 with two RBI, including a home run in the top of the sixth inning. FSU had nine hits and three walks and left eight runners on base.
FSU pitchers only issued one walk in the doubleheader and the defense was solid aside from an inexcusable dropped fly ball in game one by the right fielder. FSU got what it needed on the mound, and the hitters I mentioned in the preview that needed to stay hot contributed in some key moments.
FSU played well in all aspects and I believe the experience of playing tough games on the road earlier in the season paid off. Clemson had won 23 straight games, but I pointed out they hadn’t played a tough schedule like FSU had thus far.
This FSU softball teams seems to be gelling better than earlier in the season and making fewer mistakes. They will go for the sweep Friday night at 6 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2.
