FSU baseball: Carrion walks off Pitt Panthers in extra innings
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (10-3) opens conference play with a walk-off 3-2 extra-inning win over the Pittsburgh Panthers Friday night.
Jackson Baumeister gave the Noles their first quality start in the last four games, going five innings, striking out nine, walking three, allowing three hits, and one earned run.
Conner Whittaker went 5.1 innings in relief, striking out nine, four hits, one earned run, and walking one.
Doug Kirkland relieved Whittaker with runners on 1st and third with one out in the top of the 11th and induced a groundball double play to get out of the jam.
Jamie Arnold relieved Kirkland with runners on first and second with one out in the top of the 12th. He induced a 6u-3 double play to get out of the jam to set up Carrion’s heroics in the bottom of the inning.
Cam Smith and James Tibbs led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Jaime Ferrer walked to load the bases with no outs for Carrion.
Pitt brought its infield in, and Carrion shot a ball right between the shortstop and third baseman for the walk-off win.
FSU had 11 hits but were only 3-21 with runners on base. Colton Vincent and Cade Bush had wo hits each. James Tibbs went 1-2 and walked four times.
They also struck out 15 times, swinging at some pitches way out of the zone. It was a big win for the Noles and Baumeister and Whittaker eating most of the innings in this game helped save the bullpen for the next two games.
Wyatt Crowell will make his first career start against Pitt on Saturday. He’s been lights out from the bullpen, so it’ll be interesting to see how long he can go in a start.
If the Noles can get at least five innings out of him, that would be optimal. They’ll look to clinch the series with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. ET.
