FSU football running back Trey Benson naturally moves into the RB1 category for the 2023 season after leading the team in rushing last season.

Benson fell just 10 yards short of reaching his goal of eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards, and it had to be painful to know he left a ton of yards on the field.

Benson spoke with the media after Monday’s practice and said he and running backs coach David Johnson watch a cut-up of his film from last year, and he left about 400 rushing yards on the field because he didn’t trust what he saw or his speed at times.

He also said he often talks to his idol and the last FSU running back to reach the 1,000-yard mark, Cam Akers. He also plans to reach out to Dalvin Cook, who many consider the best FSU running back of all time to get some pointers about what he needs to improve on.

Trey Benson looks rocked up, listed at 221 pounds, and said he’s still getting used to running like a bigger back because he often relied on his speed in high school and looked to avoid contact.

However, David Johnson has challenged Benson to become more physical and to run like a bigger back. We saw him flash that ability last season, but he admits there were times he ran like he weighed 170 pounds.

Benson was candid in his evaluation of his play and seems determined to show everyone what he’s capable of as the starter from day one. An improved passing game and the offensive line should open many opportunities for Benson to flourish as he has a better grasp of the offense.

Trey Benson had a lot of explosive plays, averaging 6.43 yards per rush in 2022 while averaging 12 carries. I expect his carries to increase to about 16-18 carries, and if he continues to develop while maintaining his explosiveness, there’s no reason he can’t reach 1,300+ yards rushing.
