FSU football: Fans react to Miami’s new offensive coordinator hire
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football fans have had a great time laughing at what the Miami Hurricanes have gone through over the past year or so.
It all started with FSU beating them in the 2021 season and Miami fans hyping up Mario Cristobal and his mediocre staff as the best in the nation.
I tried to tell Miami fans that staff was a joke then, and here we are one year later with a devastating blowout loss against FSU and both coordinators and QB coach out the door.
Miami hired their defensive coordinator replacement about a week ago, and many fans trolled them about it.
It looks like Mario Cristobal has finally settled on a hire, with multiple folks reporting they’ll hire Houston’s offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.
Fan Reaction
Miami had an opening at its QB coach position since the former coach left to become the offensive coordinator at Appalachian State. It looks like Dawson will attempt to kill two birds with one stone.
Thoughts
I’m sure Miami fans will tell everyone Dawson is an elite hire without understanding the context of the hire. Dawson is a spread offense guy who through the ball 55 percent of the time last year. Those comments are hilarious from FSU fans and teams that have had a relationship with Dawson’s coaching in the past.
Mario Cristobal is notorious for handcuffing his offensive coordinators because he wants to run the ball all the time.
Cristobal had a first-round NFL Draft pick at Oregon in Justin Herbert, and they still ran the ball 53 percent of the plays. Miami got blown out in five games last year and had one more passing play than running play for the season.
The other question is why hasn’t Dawson worked at a P5 program since 2015. That Kentucky team only averaged 24.7 ppg and 5.47 ypp. He was only there one season before getting fired by Mark Stoops.
It’s one thing to score points in the Big 12 conference a decade ago, but we know that conference isn’t known for playing defense, or wasn’t back then.
This hire tells me Mario Cristobal can’t get proven coaches to work for him, and good luck with getting these two differing philosophies to mesh well.
