Defense-Makers at Defensive End

FSU football coaches struck gold in back-to-back recruiting cycles in the transfer portal with Jermaine Johnson and Jared Verse.

Verse decided to return for a second season which decreased the importance of the position in 2023, but coaches still took a quality transfer in South Carolina’s Gilber Edmonds.

FSU could potentially lose Verse, Derrick McLendon, and redshirt sophomore Patrick Payton after the 2023 season.

The Noles have some bodies at the position they like, but they are either unproven or need more time to develop. Payton is the last high school defensive end the staff has developed into a quality defensive end and that needs to change ASAP.

They have been in the mix for several elite recruits at the position in the last two recruiting cycles. Names like one-time commits Nyjalik Kelly and Keldric Faulk come to mind.

Dylan Stephenson is a player they need to zero in on, among others. FSU Commit Jamorie Flagg is a great start at the position.
