Special Teams

I believe offenses need to score touchdowns instead of settling for field goals. It’s one thing I love about Mike Norvell and his willingness to play for touchdowns.

Frankly, he had no choice for much of the year with the kicking woes for Ryan Fitzgerald. The offense lost the NC State game, but it didn’t help they had no faith in Ryan Fitzgerald to kick a field goal to win the game.

Not having a kicker changes how coaches call the game and allow defenses to do things they may not normally do because they know you can’t kick one.

Fitzgerald improved in the second half of the year, but he’ll need to be more consistent in 2023 to help the offense. FSU coaches added a transfer portal kicker to give him some competition this season.

My hope is the offense will be so good they won’t need to settle for a field goal to win a game in 2023. However, it was comforting to have Roberto Aguayo during the 2013 season when you needed him.

FSU special teams in all other areas was outstanding last season.
