Johnny Wilson

Here’s an excerpt about what I said regarding Johnny Wilson after the spring game:

"He was an early enrollee, which is an important caveat in learning the offense, and you can’t teach 6’7″ and 230 pounds at the wide receiver position. He’s physically ready to play and had solid production in limited action at Arizona State. He had 18 receptions for 243 yards and one touchdown in only eight games. If we project that production out to 12 games, that’s probably between 25-30 receptions and 400 receiving yards with a couple of touchdowns. Newsflash, those numbers would best any wide receiver from FSU last season."

Johnny Wilson was a man among boys at the wide receiver position. Most pundits were skeptical of his ability, relying on folks from the Pac-12 who may have only seen him in action a few times.

However, most of his issues were injuries and his first year in college taking place during a pandemic. The guy was the No. 116 player overall in his recruiting class for a reason.

If he could stay healthy, I knew he’d put some respectable numbers in Mike Norvell’s offense.

However, at times he was unstoppable(Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Oklahoma games). He did have issues catching some wide-open passes, but he hauled in some incredibly tough catches, often to keep the chains moving for the offense.

Wilson earned All-ACC First Team honors with 42 receptions for 897 yards and five touchdowns. This season was better than Kelvin Benjamin’s 2012 season. Could we see the same time of jump that Benjamin had the following year for Wilson?

He’ll return for the 2023 season as the No. 1 receiver in the most explosive offense in the nation.
