Trey Benson

Here’s an excerpt I wrote about Trey Benson’s impact after we saw him in the spring game:

"Benson suffered a devastating knee injury and didn’t have much of any production since arriving at Oregon in the 2020 recruiting class. That injury gave FSU football fans pause, and many felt he was a waste of a scholarship. Once again, the coaching staff proved they knew what they were doing and trusted their evaluations. Benson’s performance in spring camp and the spring game opened everyone’s eyes as to what he’s capable of as a player. He looks to be FSU’s most dynamic running back and will likely evolve into the No. 1 running back on the team before the season ends as long as he remains healthy."

That’s exactly what happened, but it took an injury to Treshaun Ward for it to transpire. It took Benson a few games to gain confidence in his first game action since his injury, often running timid despite his NFL ready physique.

Benson finished the season as the team’s leading rusher with 990 yards on 154 carries and nine touchdowns. He also had 13 receptions for 144 yards and chipped in on kickoff returns, returning one for a touchdown to open the Boston College game.

Benson made All-ACC Second Team and won ACC Running Back of the Week four times. Benson will go into next year as the odds on favorite No. 1 running back behind an improved offensive line and likely better passing game.

He’ll have talent in the running back room to push him, and he’ll likely eclipse his goal of 1,000 rushing yards he fell just shy of in 2022.
