FSU football: Grading our top 10 BOLD predictions for 2022 season
By Kelvin Hunt
Trey Benson will surpass 1,200 all-purpose yards
Here’s what I wrote:
"Running back projections in Mike Norvell’s offenses are difficult because he usually uses a stable of backs. We’ve seen carries split fairly evenly between three backs in 2020. Most of the carries went to two running backs and the quarterback in 2021. I expect more of a two-man system this year, with Jordan Travis likely running a little less than he has the past two years. One of those running backs will be Trey Benson, who’s the biggest physically, and the biggest threat to take a run to the house for a long score. I project Benson to get around 150 carries on the season, equating to around 930 rushing yards if averages 6.2 yards per rush. Jashaun Corbin averaged 6.2 yards per rush behind a banged-up offensive line and no passing game. If Benson gets around 930 rushing yards, he’d only need 270 receiving yards to surpass the 1,200 yards all-purpose mark. I expect fewer tackles for a loss in the run game, and Benson can fall forward for 2-3 yards with his size alone. If he consistently does that and takes a few long runs to the house? All of those are positive signs he could pull this off."
Trey Benson got off to a slow start in the first few games outside of the season opener. However, the second half of the Louisville game saw Benson gain confidence and become more assertive, but we didn’t see him fully emerge until Treshaun Ward went down with an injury against NC State.
Benson has 965 rushing yards and 111 receiving yards to a total of 1,076 yards. That leaves him 124 yards short of my 1,200 predictions which he could reach in the bowl game. Benson set a goal 1,000 yard rush goal before the season, and it look like his could join his idol Cam Akers as the last FSU running back to do it.
