Defense Doesn’t Create A Ton of Havoc Against Good Teams

Florida’s defense isn’t elite, ranking at No. 56 in FEI advanced metrics, and it’s one reason I’m confident FSU will win this game.

FSU has faced several teams with defensive FEI ratings in the same ballpark. Miami checks in at No. 51, Georgia Tech at No. 39, Boston College at No. 68, and Syracuse at No. 44.

The one thing in common with all of those teams? The FSU offense has obliterated them because they couldn’t generate many tackles for a loss or quarterback sacks.

When looking at comparable offenses like UGA, Tennessee, LSU, and Utah? Florida only averaged 3.25 tackles for a loss and one sack per game.

The FSU offensive line has only allowed 16 sacks and 65 tackles for a loss in 11 games. That’s with the backups playing nearly the entire second half in five blowout wins.

If Florida can’t generate a pass rush or put the Noles in predictable passing situations? That’s probably not going to result in many defensive stops.
