Team Fell Off Since Last Year

The 2021 version of Louisiana-Lafayette saw a team that lost their season opener against the only Power 5 team they played, Texas, only to run the table the rest of the season to finish 13-1.

They defeated Marshall in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Despite only playing one Power 5 team, advanced metrics favored Louisiana and had them ranked No. 40 at the end of the season.

They had the No. 43 ranked offense and No. 50 defense. However, they had several one-score victories, including three wins by three points or fewer.

The 2022 version has seen those one-score games go in the opposite direction, with four of their five losses coming by six points or fewer.

Although the losses have been close, advanced metrics have the Ragin’ Cajuns ranked No. 78 overall. Their offense ranks No. 99, and the defense ranks No. 62.

It’s not the same team, with a different coaching staff and several players entering the transfer portal or following Billy Napier to Florida.

For comparison, Miami ranks No. 87 overall, with the No. 93 offense and No. 59 defense.
