Injuries Have Taken Their Toll

I expected Syracuse to be better than their record indicated, but they found ways to win a couple of games early that could have gone the other way.

However, I knew they lacked adequate depth and talent, which ultimately would come back to haunt them with a back-loaded schedule.

The gamut of NC State, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh and their physical play did as expected, with Syracuse losing fullback/tight end Chris Elmore, linebacker Stefon Thompson, wide receiver Isaiah Jones, defensive lineman Terry Lockett, and defensive lineman Denis Jaquez Jr.

Starting cornerback Garrett Williams and starting quarterback Garrett Shrader have injuries, and Syracuse’s play on both sides have dropped drastically.

It’s not clear if Shrader will return against the Noles, but Williams is out for the year. Syracuse’s backup QB, Florida transfer Carlos Del Rio has looked serviceable at times, but the Syracuse offense hasn’t scored more than 24 points in the last four contests.

That doesn’t bode well against an FSU defense that’s finally getting healthy and solid against the run.
