FSU football defeats LSU, puts national audience on notice
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football went into the Sunday night game against LSU as slight betting underdogs and won 24-23.
A stout defense and efficient offense kept LSU off balance all night, and the game should have been a blowout win for the Noles if not for two dropped touchdown passes by FSU receivers. Jordan Travis played out of his mind, converting several third-down passes and doing damage with his legs in the running game.
Camren McDonald had a couple of huge third-down receptions, and Ontaria Wilson caught two touchdowns, the second one a one-handed catch with the defender draped over him.
The Noles led 7-3 at halftime and could have gone up big just before the half after a muffed punt by LSU. Mike Norvell elected to go for it on fourth and goal instead of kicking a field goal.
However, a previous missed field goal may have influenced his thought process. The Noles only punted once in the first half and scored on every possession in the second half except for their final possession, when they were trying to run the clock out.
It was FSU’s first three-and-out of the night, but LSU muffed another punt, which gave the Noles the ball on the LSU eight-yard line.
The Noles had the ball on the one-yard line on second down, and Treshaun Ward fumbled the pitch on a running play. LSU took the ball from their one-yard line and got to the FSU one-yard line with one second remaining as a they got a field down and got tackled in bounds.
LSU threw a touchdown as time expired, but FSU special teams blocked the extra point to seal the win!
What a win for Mike Norvell, although the game should have never been that close. I’m interested to see where this win takes this program.
