Winning Early Downs

The FSU offense will have to find more success on early downs in 2022. The Noles got behind the chains too much last year and were put in obvious passing downs too often.

The hope is they can avoid negative or plays for no gain on early downs to make third downs more manageable. FSU’s inability to convert third downs led to too many wasted opportunities and punts.

As I wrote earlier this week, FSU only had 42 red zone opportunities in 12 games last year. That’s just over three per game and one of the prime reasons they only average 27 ppg last year. They were No. 7 nationally, with touchdowns scored in the red zone last year.

If they can sustain more drives, that should mean more points scored as they get inside the red zone more often.

It all comes back to winning early downs and keeping third downs manageable and less predictable.
