Renardo Green

As I think of the 2021 season, one thing I can’t help but remember is all of the missed opportunities. That team had talented starters, but some had limitations due to a lack of talent or experience.

One player from last year that comes to mind is former starting cornerback Jarvis Brownlee. Brownlee has since departed the program unceremoniously for Louisville, and one question mark going into spring and fall camp was who would replace him?

FSU had some talented cornerbacks on the roster and brought in one of the better freshmen prospects nationally in Azareye’h Thomas.

Thomas flashed quite a bit, and that competition seems to have brought out the best in one upperclassman, Renardo Green. Green has had a great offseason and would be my bet to start the first game at field cornerback against Duquesne.

The redshirt junior has battled injuries since arriving at FSU but has experience and may be an upgrade over Brownlee, especially in coverage. Green has more length and better top-end speed, and the latter was a limitation that cost Brownlee against faster wide receivers.

Omarion Cooper holding down the boundary corner position and having a better option at field corner in Green makes the FSU defense more formidable.

It could help offset a little of the expected pass rush loss with the departures of Jermaine Johnson and Keir Thomas. Better coverage could result in more sacks than they’d have otherwise, plus it helps to sure up a weakness in the defense.
