Shawn Russ Jr.

FSU coaches accepted the third defensive back commitment in its 2023 recruiting class Monday night with the addition of three-star Kenton Kirkland. Kirkland and another commit, Quindarrius Jones will likely play safety for the Noles, with commit Jabril Rawls likely playing cornerback.

That potentially leaves one more spot if the coaches take another defensive back. Four-star defensive back Shawn Russ fits the bill at 6’2″ and 185 pounds. Russ plays safety, cornerback, and wide receiver for his high school team. He recently placed the Noles in his top three list of schools:

Russ has 22 offers and visited the Noles back in April. He tentatively set official visits for Michigan and South Carolina in May.

Apparently, South Carolina is out of it since they didn’t make his top three, but we’ve seen recruits leave schools out of their top list and then commit to a school not listed! I think this recruitment will come down to how bad FSU wants to take another high school defensive back or not.

If they press for him, I’d like to think they’d have a great shot if they wanted him. He’s from Florida and listed as the No. 389 player and No. 36 cornerback nationally. We’ll have to see if he comes back to campus this fall.
