Defense

If you’re a frequent reader of the site, you know I’ve expected the defense to be the strength of the team. I’ve been bullish, expecting this defense to be every bit of the top 30 at the worst, and it looks like that could come to fruition.

The defensive line will be stout against the run, and the addition of Tatum Bethune will be huge to help sure up the linebacker position along with Kalen DeLoach.

However, DJ Lundy has reshaped his body and lost about 20 pounds which should help elevate that unit overall.

Then there’s Amari Gainer and freshmen Omar Graham Jr., who’ll likely get a few snaps here and there. Azareya’h Thomas has been the star of fall camp and looks to be fighting for a starting position at field cornerback.

That competition has forced Renardo Green to up his game, and he hasn’t been bad, but it’s that Thomas has been that good. The secondary should be a strength of the team, especially if the pass rush is there from the defensive ends.

It looks like there may not be too much of a drop-off from that position with the departures of Jermaine Johnson and Keir Thomas. There’s better depth at that position overall. This defense should be very good in 2022.
