FSU football: Is 2022 schedule as daunting as some think?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football will get its 2022 season underway on August 27th when they host FCS opponent Duquesne.
On paper, it’ll be the easiest game on the schedule, but the Noles will face one of the more talented teams the following week in LSU. Most people look at FSU’s schedule as one of the tougher ones in the nation.
They will play several teams with returning quarterbacks and likely a few ranked teams at some point in the season. ESPN’s Football Power Index has the Noles with the No. 28 strength of schedule nationally.
For context purposes, their 2021 schedule finished No. 41 nationally. Is the 2022 schedule that tough? Let’s take a look at where each FBS team ranks on ESPN’s preseason FPI rankings (FSU ranks No. 33):
- LSU-No. 10
- Louisville-No. 36
- Boston College-No. 59
- Wake Forest-No. 30
- NC State-No. 28
- Clemson-No. 4
- Georgia Tech-No. 66
- Miami-No. 9
- Syracuse-No. 60
- Louisiana-No. 74
- Florida-No. 29
Right off the bat, I can tell you LSU and Miami belong nowhere inside the top 10, as both teams have too many holes on their roster. There’s a reason why oddsmakers have the Noles as only three or four-point betting underdogs. The same will likely be true when FSU travels to Doak South in November.
No question Clemson will feature a talented team and won 10 games last year, but can we really put them at No. 4 after last year’s performances? Can we put Florida at No. 29 with what they lost from their team last year?
Also, Georgia Tech and Syracuse face a gauntlet before taking on FSU later in the year. That accumulation of losses likely means they would fall in these rankings.
I don’t know, but it feels like ESPN is doing their usual propping up some SEC teams early and getting on the Miami hype train early. Miami plays cupcakes in three of their first four games and the weaker ACC Coastal Division.
This is a different subject, but if we look at Miami’s strength of schedule? How is it possible their schedule ranks No. 30, just two spots below FSU?
Give FSU Miami’s schedule, and they’d likely win eight games without question. If Jordan Travis stays healthy, they should do that anyway.
