Red Zone TD Scoring Defense

One of the hidden areas I pointed out that needed to improve last season was the red zone scoring offense. The offense did that, improving their TD percentage in the red zone from 61.29 percent in 2020 to 73.81 percent in 2021.

It’s what kept the offense in games even though they didn’t score a ton of points, but when they got in the red zone, they made it count, scoring 90 percent of their opportunities (74 percent in 2020).

Now, it’s the FSU defense’s turn to improve in this area. FSU was seventh nationally, with teams scoring 70 percent of their opportunities in the red zone.

However, that percentage fell to No. 86 nationally when it came to touchdowns allowed at 61.76 percent. FSU either got a stop or allowed a touchdown, as teams only made three  red zone field goals against them all season.

It’s great to get stops in the red zone, but they need to keep some touchdowns to field goals in 2022.

One positive, though. Teams only had 34 red zone opportunities in 2021 against the FSU defense. That’s not bad considering opposing offenses usually had decent field position because of poor special teams.
