FSU baseball fired Mike Martin Jr. after three years as head coach, citing failure to meet the standard after finishing 34-25 and a regional exit for the second consecutive year as a three seed.

Failure to meet the standard is something Mike Martin Jr. mentioned in the post-game press conference after the season-ending loss against UCLA.

The standard winning conference championships, earning a regional host, and realistic chances to win that elusive national championship.

It became clear after the last two seasons those things were unattainable under Mike Martin Jr. I know some people argue he should have had the final year of his contract to see if he could turn it around.

I wouldn’t have been too upset with how much he has given to FSU baseball. However, sometimes when you go on dates, it doesn’t take a third, fourth, or fifth date to determine if things have a realistic shot of working out.

There’s the question of if Martin Jr. was allowed to stay, how many of the current players on the roster would be willing to come back? It depends on how many and who, but that likely speaks to the state of the program and part of why a change happened.

I spoke about believing Michael Alford had someone in mind on the Built For Playmakers Podcast Friday. Here are my top three candidates.
